TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction)

TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction)

Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction Syndrome (TMJ) is a common condition affecting a wide variety of people. TMJ is characterized by severe headaches, jaw pain of varying degrees, grinding teeth, and an intermittent ringing in the ears. The vast majority of TMJ sufferers are unaware that the root cause of these problems is something that a dentist can effectively treat.

The symptoms of TMJ are debilitating and can greatly interfere with every day life. The comfort and general well-being of the patient are at the heart of the dental practice, so pain relief is the first consideration of the dentist. The dentist is able to test, diagnose, and devise an immediate plan to treat the underlying causes of the TMJ disorder.

Reasons for treating TMJ

TMJ sufferers report that their symptoms generally worsen during periods of prolonged or unexpected stress and that intense outbreaks of the condition can lead to neck pain and dizziness.

The most common cause of TMJ is the misalignment of the teeth, often called “bad bite.” It is possible for the dentist to realign or adjust the teeth without the need for painful or expensive surgeries. The realignment/adjustment will stop the pounding headaches, jaw pain, and dizziness.

The grinding teeth symptom is particularly common and usually occurs at night. The grinding will eventually erode the structure of the teeth and lead to much more severe dental problems in the future. Untreated TMJ is one of the prime underlying factors in eroded jawbones and loose teeth.

It is important for anyone experiencing the symptoms of TMJ to visit the dentist for an exact diagnosis.

What does treating TMJ involve?

TMJ could be a result of several different problems. Bad bite is the most common, but an injury resulting from a blow to the meniscus cartilage is also a possibility. Initially, the dentist will thoroughly examine the jaw area, the patient’s bite, take X-rays, and review the patient’s history in order to make an accurate diagnosis and recommend necessary treatment.

Once a firm diagnosis is attained, there are several ways that relief can be provided. A specially molded bite guard can be created to stop teeth grinding during the night. A bite relationship analysis might be recommended by the dentist. The dentist can also provide advice on relaxation techniques which will lessen the effects of stress. As a last alternative, the dentist is also able to prescribe muscle relaxants.

A better option is to change the shape of the teeth and get rid of the bad bite completely, often called “realignment.” This is especially useful because it alleviates TMJ symptoms and can improve the aesthetic appearance of the teeth as well. Realignment involves adjusting the relationship between how the upper teeth come together with the lower teeth. This may require new restorations and/or adjusting the natural teeth as well. It is not a painful procedure, and it is one the dentist has performed with great success numerous times. As with any procedure, the dentist will be happy to answer questions and discuss symptoms, options, and treatments.

If you are experiencing any symptoms of TMJ, we encourage you to contact our office today to schedule an appointment.

I was referred to Envision Dental by my buddy Congo, and he said they were the best. So I came here for my cleaning... and he was right!!! Excellent staff, Beth took great care of me and Dr Bowers is Awesome. So I scheduled the rest of the family and my wife and daughters had their teeth cleaned by Savanah who was equally as professional and as thorough. I called this office at the advise of my coworkers. I was looking for a new dentist for my entire family. My original... contact was with Katrina, she was the kindest and most compassionate person I have spoken to in a dental office or really any offices. When I arrived to the beautifully decorated office, the compassion did not end with Katrina. Every person we had contact with was non judgmental and friendly. We have had 3 appointments so far, and each of our experiences were amazing. We have had both Savanah and Beth as our hygienists, and they were just as amazing. Then it came time to see Dr. Bowers, she made me feel like she had known me for years and I was family. I have already told everyone that they should give this office a try! I am not one for writing reviews, but this office and its staff all REALLY deserve mention!read more

Envision Dental Patients and Families,

Thank you for trusting us with your dental needs. We miss seeing you and hope this letter finds you well!

As we look to reopen our doors after the state-mandated period of closure, we want you to know that we are taking extra steps to further keep you, your family and our team safe. We have always used the highest standard of practices for keeping our patients and staff safe from any threat of the transmission of diseases. However, in order to accommodate current new needs and regulations our office will run differently, and it will look different as well.

The intent of this letter is to familiarize you with these changes prior to your next office visit.
From now on appointments will be managed to allow for social distancing between patients. That might mean that you are offered fewer options for scheduling your appointment.

On the day of your appointment we will ask for you to text or call us from your vehicle and let us know that you have arrived. We will let you know when it is time for you to come in. You will then be offered hand sanitizer and asked to fill out a COVID-19 questionnaire.

We will be taking and recording your temperature at the front desk. If you have a temperature above 99.9° F, we will ask you to reschedule your appointment. Our team will also be having daily temperature checks to ensure that no one who is symptomatic will be present in the office.

In order to further prevent any possible cross-contamination, our reception area will also be closed. We are asking that family and friends not come to your appointment with you unless the appointment is for a minor or you are needing help physically inside the building.

After your intake, we will escort you to the room where you will be met by your provider.

When checking out if you have a co-pay we will still collect at time of service. Our front office team will have everything ready for you to streamline the time you spend at the front desk and keep you safe. During this change we ask for your patience with our new protocols and procedures. Our main goal is to take care of you as patients, team, and our families.

We again thank you for trusting us with your dental needs and appreciate your understanding as we implement these new protocols, which are designed for your health and safety. Please also understand that as government rules and regulations change, we may need to further modify our protocols.

We are looking forward to taking care of you, your family, your friends and provide you a safe, comfortable and relaxing dental experience.

Stay safe,

Dr. Aline Bowers and Envision Dental Team
